Skopje, with its approximately 450,000 inhabitants, is on the river Vardar. The hometown of mother Teresa is a Roman foundation. Since 1991 Skopje has been the capital of the former Yugoslavian republic Macedonia. Castle Skopsko Kale, which was built by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I., thrones high above the town. The old stone bridge over the Vardar and the orthodox Church of St. Kliment are further tourist highlights of Skopje.
