12 million inhabitants make Bombay, the capital of the federal state Maharashtra, the biggest metropolis of Western India. The city is characterized by a busy port and a progressive industry, by innumerable both small and large markets and reflecting skyscrapers. Bombay fascinates and draws the eye into its spell. The best known emblem of the town is the “Gateway of India”, a triumphal arch, set up in 1911 to the memory of King George V. From here ships are leaving in the direction of the quiet and wooded Elephanta Island, whose cave-temple should be visited by every Bombay tourist. Moreover, Bombay is noted for its immense output of local films: every year the film studios of the city produce more movies than the dream factory Hollywood.
