Azerbaijan is a state by the Caspian Sea with a great past. Unfortunately, one gets to feel little of this in the capital Baku. Only behind the gate to the old town of Baku (the Icheri Sheher) a Middle Eastern atmosphere lies in the air. There are many sights here: the Mohammed Ibn Abubekir Mosque, the 1,000 years old Synyk Kala Minaret, the caravansary from the 14th century (where one can cost Azerbaijani specialities), the Mashdie Hamam and the carpet museum. In addition to that, Azerbaijan has many fascinating national parks. The Gizilagach or Gircan in the region of Lenkoran are known for their damp subtropical climate. Travelling to the Azerbaijan-Naxcivan enclave, which is located between Armenia and Iran, you can get to know the art and culture of the Seljuk Turks.
